Coorg or Kodagu district lies in the south-western part of Karnataka and is a hill station. Madikeri or muddu keri or Mercara is its capital. It lies at a distance of about 257 KMs from Bangalore which is the capital of Karnataka. I along with two of my friends recently went there for the new year. Madikeri is a town just like any other. You won’t experience any local culture or tradition unless you visit someone who stays there. You get good accomodation at affordable prices and food is the same that you get in almost all parts of Karnataka. The best thing is to stay at Madikeri and see other places that lie a distance of 100KMs (MAX) from there. Some of the good places to visit are TalaCauvery (birth place of river Cauvery), Abbey or Abbi falls, Tibetian monasteries at Kushalnagar, Harangi dam, Dubare elephant camp.

Talacauvery is the best place we visited, Abbey or Abbi falls was very good but was crowded. Raja’s seat in Madikeri town was good and the sunset was very beautiful to watch from there, but again it was too crowded. The road from Bangalore to Madikeri and back is good, no complaints there. We did enjoy the journey as we had gone in our own private vehicle and were able to stop and enjoy scenic places whenever we found one! But the real disappointment was that we couldn’t experience and local tradition or cuisine which the place is so famous for. One of the highlights of the trip was the statue of General Cariappa at one of the circles in Madikeri which was really imposing and shows the amazing and invaluable contribution made to the Indian military services by the people of Coorg.
